“And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he…the spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.” – 1 Samuel 16:12-13 (KJV)
David exhibited confidence in God very early. He understood the importance of seeking wisdom to navigate the challenges faced and protecting others under his charge.
The account in 1 Samuel 16-17 pointed out some of David’s leadership qualities, such as his unwavering loyalty and dedication in service unto his biological father (Jesse), King Saul, and God. Despite knowing he was chosen and anointed to be king of Israel, David never sought to undermine his elders’ position to install himself on the throne before his appointed time.
The evidence of faith and trust in God was even more illustrated in the triumphant victory in his battle against Goliath. David heard the enemy was taunting his people and immediately sought to find a solution (1 Samuel 17:26). He did not cower like many others (despite his youth).
Friends, God has bestowed many gifts on our children, and the responsibility is now ours to nurture these giftings within them for the strengthening and advancement of the kingdom of God. As leaders, we must encourage them to be proactive and solutions-oriented and not follow the way that seems easiest, i.e., leaving the solution for someone else to find when it’s already within us. We delay God’s blessings in this manner.
Remember, in this season, the world is campaigning extremely hard for our youth. Therefore, we must not procrastinate but seek God’s wisdom, for opportunities lost can be difficult to regain.
